Mum blasts 'irresponsible' Poundland after teenage daughter buys fake knife coventry telegraph

A mum has blasted Poundland for "sending out the wrong message" after her teenage daughter bought a fake knife from the store to go trick or treating.

Karen Rimington said she was horrified her child was allowed to buy the plastic play weapon from her local store. The knife, part of Poundland's Halloween range, comes complete with fake blood and was bought for £1 from a branch in Solihull.Mrs Rimington said: "When my daughter got it out of her bag, I immediately took a sharp intake of breath.

"From a distance it looked like the real thing.

"How irresponsible of this company to sell this product, particularly in our current climate when knife crime has increased and the fear of knife crime has increased.

"This product is sending out the wrong messages. Our children and teenagers should not be targeted in this way.

"I don't think they should have allowed my teenage daughter to buy such an item. And to be able to buy it so cheaply is very worrying.

"When kids are out on Halloween night, in the dark, at first glance this knife could look very real.

"If the police saw kids with this, they could think they were carrying a real knife."

Following her complaint, Poundland customer services told Mrs Rimington: "We are sorry to hear about your concerns regarding the Halloween products and apologise for any offence caused.

"Our Halloween range caters for a wide range of customers and the fake blood and plastic knife are part of the range, but the intention of this product is not to cause any upset or concern."

A Poundland spokeswoman added: "Poundland is a responsible retailer and committed to providing its customers with quality products.

"Our Halloween range is not intended to offend in any way and is in line with other retailers Halloween offering."
